I have seen where some characters (owner of PeaceMakers in Anvil) get attacked by creatures (especially Will-o-wisps) and get killed. They are dead for the rest of the game.

You have to sleep in the Manor. Be prepared to fight some ghosts (magic or silver weapons). This will start the second part of the quest
