Ezio Auditore:
I had time, but I did not see it. I had liberty, but I did not know it. I have love, but I did not feel it. It would take me many decades before I understood these words.

"People can't imagine what we've felt, what we've heard. We all have secrets, we all wear masks. We wear our mask tightly to hide from the days gone past. So tightly that we pray that we suffocate. We smile to leave people in hope, to give ourselves hope but we know the truth. We never want to let go of that smile. We fake it, in hope that one day it will become real.."

Mine would be a quote by Jon Krakauer-
"Nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”

A teacher said two things to me that were among the smartest things I've ever heard. They may not be her own words, but if she was quoting someone, I don't know who:

"Always choose incompetence over conspiracy."
It's true. People who do you wrong are far more often stupid than evil. It's worth remembering because you finding yourself feeling sorry for the people who wrong you rather than hating them. It's much nicer to think that way.

"Ask yourself at what point you think it's ok to stop treating someone like a fellow human being."
She said this in response to a student making fun of someone. Most people wouldn't have an issue with what he said. The crimes this person committed lose them the respect of pretty much everyone on the planet. But it's an interesting question to ask yourself. Every time you make fun of someone, know that you are treating them as less than human. Ask yourself if you're ok with that. Some people can feel comfortable with it. Personally, I can't. There are people who I don't like at all, people who show no respect to me or anyone else. But I still think that they deserve mine. I realised this by asking myself that question.

From a few classics:

"Liberty, far from putting man in possession of himself, ceaselessly alienates him from his essence and his world; it fascinates him in the absolute exteriority of other people and money, in the irreversible inferiority of passion and unfulfilled desire." - Madness and Civilization

"And even when they became discontented, as they sometimes did, their discontent led nowhere, because, being without general ideas, they could only focus it on petty specific grievances. The larger evils invariably escaped their notice." - 1984

"But that's always the way; it don't make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person's conscience ain't got no sense, and just goes for him anyway. If I had a yaller dog that didn't know no more than a person's conscience does, I would poison him." - The Adventures Huckleberry Finn

"God help thee, old man, thy thoughts have created a creature in thee; and he whose intense thinking thus makes him Prometheus; a vulture feeds upon that heart for ever; that vulture the very creature he creates." - Moby Dick

"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets."
-Voltaire

Couldn't agree more. And:

"It would be if it were doctrine. But it is merely an observation on the nature of reality. To say that nothing is true is to realise that the foundations of society are fragile and that we must the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted is to understand that we are the architects of our actions and that we must live with our consequences, whether glorious or tragic."
-Ezio Auditore after Sofia Sartor comments of how "nothing is true, everything is permitted" is a bit cynical.

Watch out, this is a long-ish one. I definitely prefer it over the general "live ur lyf" [&@%!] you see everywhere.
Spoiler:
On: The Penguin Cafe Orchestra
In 1972 I was in the south of France. I had eaten some bad fish and was in consequence rather ill.
As I lay in bed I had a strage recurring vision, there, before me, was a concrete building like a hotel or council block.
I could see into the rooms, each of which was continually scanned by an electronic eye. In the rooms were people, every one of them preoccupied.
In one room a person was looking into a mirror, and in another, a couple were making love, but lovelessly, in a third, a composer was listening to music through headphones.
Around him there were banks of electronic equipment. But all was silence.
Like everyone in this place, he had been neutralized, made grey and anonymous. The scene was for me one of ordered desolation.
It was as if I were looking into a place which had no heart.
The next day, when I felt better, I was on the beach sunbathing and suddenly a poem popped into my head. It started out:
'I am the proprietor of the Penguin Cafe, I will tell you things at random...'
And it went on about how the quality of randomness, spontaneity, surprise, unexpectedness, and irrationality in our lives is a very precious thing.
And if you surpress that to have a nice orderly life, you kill off what's most important.
Whereas, in the Penguin Cafe, your unconscious can just be. It's acceptable there, and that's how everybody is.
There is and acceptance there that has to do with living the present with no fear in ourselves.
The random element in life has to be respected, the messy bits, the noisy bits, the inconvenient displays of human energy.
This was what went on in the Penguin Cafe.
—Steven Jeffes

"I don't know who you are. Please believe. There is no way I can convince you that this is not one of their tricks. But I don't care. I am me, and I don't know who you are, but I love you.

I have a pencil. A little one they did not find. I am a women. I hid it inside me. Perhaps I won't be able to write again, so this is a long letter about my life. It is the only autobiography I have ever written and oh God I'm writing it on toilet paper.

I was born in Nottingham in 1957, and it rained a lot. I passed my eleven plus and went to girl's Grammar. I wanted to be an actress.

I met my first girlfriend at school. Her name was Sara. She was fourteen and I was fifteen but we were both in Miss. Watson's class. Her wrists. Her wrists were beautiful. I sat in biology class, staring at the picket rabbit foetus in its jar, listening while Mr. Hird said it was an adolescent phase that people outgrew. Sara did. I didn't.

In 1976 I stopped pretending and took a girl called Christine home to meet my parents. A week later I enrolled at drama college. My mother said I broke her heart.

But it was my integrity that was important. Is that so selfish? It sells for so little, but it's all we have left in this place. It is the very last inch of us. But within that inch we are free.

London. I was happy in London. In 1981 I played Dandini in Cinderella. My first rep work. The world was strange and rustling and busy, with invisible crowds behind the hot lights and all that breathless glamour. It was exciting and it was lonely. At nights I'd go to the Crew-Ins or one of the other clubs. But I was stand-offish and didn't mix easily. I saw a lot of the scene, but I never felt comfortable there. So many of them just wanted to be gay. It was their life, their ambition. And I wanted more than that.

Work improved. I got small film roles, then bigger ones. In 1986 I starred in "The Salt Flats." It pulled in the awards but not the crowds. I met Ruth while working on that. We loved each other. We lived together and on Valentine's Day she sent me roses and oh God, we had so much. Those were the best three years of my life.

In 1988 there was the war, and after that there were no more roses. Not for anybody.

In 1992 they started rounding up the gays. They took Ruth while she was out looking for food. Why are they so frightened of us? They burned her with cigarette ends and made her give them my name. She signed a statement saying I'd seduced her. I didn't blame her. God, I loved her. I didn't blame her.

But she did. She killed herself in her cell. She couldn't live with betraying me, with giving up that last inch. Oh Ruth. . . .

They came for me. They told me that all of my films would be burned. They shaved off my hair and held my head down a toilet bowl and told jokes about lesbians. They brought me here and gave me drugs. I can't feel my tongue anymore. I can't speak.

The other gay women here, Rita, died two weeks ago. I imagine I'll die quite soon. It's strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years I had roses and I apologized to nobody.

I shall die here. Every last inch of me shall perish. Except one.

An inch. It's small and it's fragile and it's the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it, or sell it, or give it away. We must never let them take it from us.

I don't know who you are. Or whether you're a man or a woman. I may never see you or cry with you or get drunk with you. But I love you. I hope that you escape this place. I hope that the world turns and that things get better, and that one day people have roses again. I wish I could kiss you.

Valerie

X"
