I bought TES:Oblivion GOTY edition on the PC recently and I have not been able to play the game..I have not been able to pass the menu screen. The game freezes whenever I press either 'new' or 'exit'(the options for them to be pricise)

What I have tried:
-re-installing
-checked my specs
-deleted the oblivion.ini file found in doc/my games etc
-tried running under admin
-compatibility mode with windows XP

I've done my re-search and those where the common culprets, does anyone know anything else I can try?
Thanks

So you are on Vista, are you? I'm not much of a computer genius, but another thing I heard people recommend is - install games in any directory but not in Program Files. Dunno why or what problems exactly it solves. And the good old one - perhaps your video drive is too slow? I know mine is, which makes the game freeze at times - not in the Main Menu, thank the Nine, but still...

Just for safety: no mods?
And also I had this problem when I installed the game on a comp with somewhat bad specs (A)

I can confirm Oblivion can run WITHOUT backwards compatibility mode on win7 so I am guessing Vista is the same.

You can have my save from before the sewer exit if loading isn't a problem...

ow yeah, did you get the patches? There's some official ones, and an unofficial one, they're all a big help for stability.

haha nope, no mods yet..haven't even started a game!
I'm pretty sure there isn't a problem with the specs, I used this Can you run it and I have better than recommended.

About the save file, I can use my mothers computer to do that, but thanks for the offer.
Nope, no official patches. I dont think the GOTY edition needs them.
What unofficial patches would you be refering too exactly?

Maybe this will help. I must admit I have completely forgotten about all the patches there are for Oblivion  Just had them installed for as long as I can remember. Silly me

Thanks for the links! I dont need the first one, I own the GOTY edition that already is Version 1.2.0416.
Regarding the second one..I don't believe this, why should I have to download something so big to play a game that I paid for..
Un****ingblelievable.
I sure hope this works.

Bethesda do what they can, but in a game that size and scope, there's a serious limit to just how many bugs they can squash. They're a company remember, so they have a lot of things to concentrate on other than streamlining Oblivion. The unofficial pqtch was made independantly, so it clears up a helluva lot more bugs, but sadly console players of Oblivion (such as me formerly) are stuck with the bugs for good.

Also, as you're using GOTY, I'd recommend downloading the unofficial Shivering Isles/Official mods patches as well, as you never know.

Okay, I'll try that too.
The Unofficial patch didn't fix the problem.

EDIT: Yea, no difference.. :(

I did even more research and found that the 'problem' was that I had to change a part of the ini for some reason.
go to my documents > my games > oblivion. edit the oblivion.ini so that 'bmusicenabled=1' looks like 'bmusicenabled=0'.
I hope this helps others out!

haha no problem.
I feel that I am missing out on the music though..the ambient sounds are getting boring already. Is the music any good? also, is it like in morrowind how when an enemy sees you the music changes? I've only been playing for a few hours and those goblins in the sewers have scared me half to death atleast 3 times now!

Yes, the music does change when there are enemies hearby - which makes me all the more scared, because sometimes I can't see them myself, but the music tells me they are out there, and I get all edgy, trying to figure out where the baddies are gonna spring from.
It's a real shame about the music. I am no judge whether it's good or not - I tend to get to like any kinds of music pretty easily, but I wouldn't have lasted long without it.
