I have encountered a problem where I cannot soultrap. The normal procedure goes as follows: summon creature, cast soultrap, kill the creature. I have a soul gem in my possession. I'm trying to capture a golden saint with a grand soul gem so I know it should work.

I'm curious as to what might be happening here. I tried it a dozen times with different saves and the soultrap graphic (the white swirlies) is there, and the soultrap sound plays when the creature dies. The only thing missing is that the gem doesn't get filled!

If I use "player->addsoulgem 'golden saint' misc_soulgem_grand 1" I can give myself the gem I need. Interestingly, if I attempt to soultrap the creature first, the console command actually gives me two filled soul gems instead of just 1. Seems like maybe something got corrupted in my inventory or something. Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks.

Have you tried soul trapping non-summons?

She’s probably dispelling the Soul Trap because you are in combat. Summon the Golden Saint for 20 seconds so that she is standing in a pool of lava (like the one east of Arkngthand) and then cast soul trap. She will stand there quietly until the lava kills her. If you are quick, you can get her weapon and shield along with her soul (just don’t “dispose of corpse” or the game will crash).

Thanks for the ideas, people.

@Redguard, thanks. I'm able to trap a golden saint that was not summoned. Next, I discovered that I can trap a summoned golden saint, but ONLY if I attack and make it hostile towards me. What's up with this? My memory tells me I have trapped summoned golden saints many times before without having to antagonize them first... or am I just going crazy...

Well the target of the soul trap has to die for the spell to work.
