Ok so I've been playing ES games for about 15 years. Daggerfall hooked me, morrowind got me addicted (and is still my favorite in game world to be in), oblivion was w little dissappointing but still overall a great game, and skyrim was beautiful and an amazing game, if a little lacking on DLC (one more world expanding DLC would have been awesome but going back to solsthiem was just wonderful). Just got a new adult job and thanks to some great life changes, I'll have more money to spend than normal. Thinking about getting a PS4 anticipating fallout 4. My question is, is ESO worth it? Never played MMOs but always said I'd play a ES MMO. Anyone here close to my age (28) that would be willing to help me out starting out, (if that's a thing?). It's free so no harm as far as I can see.

Free? ESO still requires the initial purchase, but considering the amount of hours you get in return I'd say it's still definitely worth it. The game world is huge and there's a stupid amount of content to do. It's also a pretty easy MMO to get into, and you can solo the majority of the game if you want. You also won't be short on DLC for the foreseeable future if that's your thing. Just don't buy it if you're expecting Skyrim 2, it has a totally different kind of gameplay.

Just meant free as in no monthly subscription, should have clarified. And no I'm not expecting skyrim too. I've been playing ES games long before skyrim was even in production. If anything I'm hoping for morrowind 2! (Kidding, but I'd love a reboot). But I'm not expecting anything like other elder scrolls games, as they weren't anything like ESO. Plus I know game world is by far the earliest chronological world we've seen yet. Thanks for the input

You've very likely already done this, but I find watching some gameplays of people on Youtube helps you decide.
The trailers and advertisement gameplay tends to be very showy and omits the general things you would be doing whilst playing, so watching an average player in real time can give a good feel of what things you can encounter, how often, what the menus are like, etc.

I've done it a little bit, but I always end up watching morrowind modded gameplay instead. I always played on console but liked doing the most extreme things possible (i.e soul trap glitch for millions of skill points, perma command army of all the coolest npcs, hitting umbra with bound darts so he's just got his greaves on them calming him and bringing him to house of earthly delights, perma commanding vices AND dagoth ur to the abandoned shack at gnarr mok. That's the most impressive to me, it can be done) so watching those mod videos really entertains me haha.

I think it's definitely worth it. There's a lot to do in the game.

Don't expect it to be like Skyrim, because the MMO elements change it, and also don't expect it to be like other MMOs because it focuses on the world and quests and details more than other MMOs. Just judge it on its own merit.

Here's my review of it from just before it went free-to-play and the Justice System was on the test server:

And here's a guide I wrote on some gameplay aspects that are different from a regular-series ES game:

In my opinion, and as I read the other answers I realize is a common feeling for many that have been playing, the game is totally worth it.

I've been playing since May 2015, returned from beta with the B2P change, and the amount of content is sometimes overwhelming. It could be because I don't play a lot (approximately 5 or 6 hours a week, perhaps more  ... I dedicate much of my time to other occupations, as religion, family and work), but everytime I'm in-game I find much to do, to explore, to investigate, to solve, to read, and so on. Even with only one character.

Context: I'm 27, am I close enough to 28? :wat: In game I'm Veteran Level 1. And I prefer to do single-player PvE content, pairing with UESP guildies in the PC/MAC NA server to do some multi-player PvE content (or with anyone that crosses my way, for the sake of that purpose). Haven't tried much PvP yet.

Hope that helps!

Short answer, yes it's worth it.

I can relate with the shift from solo to MMO, I felt very uncertain with Destiny's campaign compared to Halo's. Much like with ESO, it doesnt demand you to give up your solo adventure, and the random encounters and chemistry random folk add only seem to highlight the experience and sparse moments.

The only real question is how much time are you willing to dedicate? Considering your an advent TES fan n no stranger to roleplaying games, dedicating some time for play sessions shouldntt be anything new, and with the amount of content a MMO provides you should be rather jolly
