I was using the search function and then removing the highlights.

We really needed an "Advanced Forum Functionality" section of the rules.

I can probably get the ball rolling on that.

DM tip: do the unexpected and see how your players react. It will give you a good idea of what their playstyle is like and how open to suggestion they are.

I did once, when I didn't really think about the situation very much and made some bad things happen that probably shouldn't have.

Methinks you're referring to Alicia.

Another gm tip, know your schedule, as there will be nothing worse for role-players that they are stuck in a action scene and the dm goes off. Make sure to leave them in a place their characters may develop.

Actually, no, she deserved anything bad that happened to her. Heck, I was told to kill her off, and she's still doing just fine. It was actually Andreo. But then I went and gave him a magical card :D

I like to give the players a guide NPC to help them along at the start so they can get into the swing of things. Once they are on their own two feet and able to take care of themselves I get rid of the character. Then the players have to work for it themselves and I stop holding their hand. I did it with Kuo in Vault 54 and Alexander in Umbra.

I still have guides, because I'm not even sure if you would follow them however..
Wait, they aren't much of guides are they?

I'd say do mostly smaller, while if you give them larger ones then you shouldn't overload them with smaller ones so they can actually, you know, finish it.

Rivals are a little hard, IMO, because if they keep getting away after mucking up the heroes' plans, then they seem like a Team Rocket type presence.

I feel that they don't interact with Main Story much but pop up a lot and upset the character(s) in some way, OR they highly interact with the Main Story, but not too much with the character(s). And when they do, they're typically a dick.

Personally, a Rival or Anti-Hero is someone who is either gradually stronger or is stronger than the pc, causing them to want to over take and over power them...

An anti-hero is not what you're thinking of. An anti-hero is a protagonist who embodies traits generally disassociated with traditional heroes, and is usually oriented towards making the audience dislike him.

Yeah I know. That's almost exactly how I described him earlier... A rival is just usually an anti-hero, since the audience hates him, yet he usually does fight for a decent cause.

Theoretically, a DM should not have to handle an anti-hero, since the DM really shouldn't be playing protagonists. Anti-heroes pop up around here from time to time, but they really shouldn't be played by a DM.

I don't really see why not, since plenty of RP's have successfully created Protagonists that weren't guide characters. As long as they fit the definition of 'Anti-Hero', I can see it working really well in numerous ways.

I disagree. It depends on the roleplay.

Anti-Villians are more fun if you are a GM. Leave Anti-Heroes for the players.

Having just finished DMing my first RP I would say you should try and cater to the average player rather than the slowest. SIAR seemed to drag a bit toward the middle when I was waiting on a few of the characters to figure out the main puzzle. I will not make that mistake again.

Not to sound condescending, I'm seriously interested: And how do you approach a situation like that, where some people aren't caught up? Do you just continue anyway?
