Hi,

Sorry to bother you all, but I couldn't figure out where else to ask about this. I was reading one of the Wiki articles (Oblivion based) when I noticed it said I had a 'message' at the top of the page. I had a look and there were two, and apparantly I, or someone using my IP address, has been making edits and doing something wrong with them? I've never tried to edit any of the pages so I'm not quite sure what's going on and want to check there's not something, well, weird happening with my computer. Perhaps I'm missing something...?

Okay if you share a "internet server" or so such you can some times have the same IP as someone else, more so if yours chnages a lot

the best thing to do is get an acount (its free) that way when you edit its under your name, less likely to get banned for someone with the same IP did.

Or ignore it, just know it is possible sadily for you to get banned over this if it keeps up and you dont make one, cause we cant stop it anyother way.
there may be more work arounds have to ask someone who knows more

Its a caching bug, you get a New Messages banner - which leads to a legitimate block notice, but it is not for you. The IP name on the page, will not match that of your computer if you check it out.



Whilst, this is possible - its so highly unlikely, its not feasible. Making an account is always recommended since it solves a few bugs, gripes and glitches!

and when it happens they tell you "if this is your IP but not you, sign in or create an acount to stop this"

I had it happen a BUNCH to me, they never said it was "not my IP" just the person shared the IP.

I'm not being funny, but i'll invite you to read back through both the Admin Noticeboard, and Community Portal - and come back to me with the dozen or so topics on this. The chances of two people on the wiki having the same, or (I read the figure) something like a million to one. Whereas, the caching problem can happen much more often than that.

the fact they say one thing on the user pages and another thing there would worry me greatly.


your link dont help bnecuse it dtn say WHY they need to be purged, nothinmg says its becuse the IP dont match yours but its actining like it dose

Just don't forget, Wolfie, that Kiz knows his stuff at the wiki, maybe in ways we forum users don't. But I'm sure he'll be glad to link you to some reading! I would read it, too. I got the same error once and was so shy I ran away and never edited.

They say the other thing because its set in the Mediawiki software we use, I do mind linking them - because that means I have to sit and read them all over again. Which, quite frankly, i'm too busy to do.

We have the caching set up so server costs are low, I think the actually figure is 1 update for every 100 anon views. (edits don't change anything). Were as, if you log in, the figure changes so you always get the version you should view.

The fact is, if you aren't logged in - you get problems, create an account. Job done.

Well I KNOW that you can share the same IP and that its common enough that you should only ban IP as a last resort, this is taught around the "world wide web" so to speak

As for HOW common, i can not say, but with how many pepole are on the internet one in one hundred thousand is still bad

I'm just looking becuse it dont make sense to say one thing, thats untrue, then say another else where.

It dose not back up what you say, it just says "takes you to a page that is not yours"

nothing says its becuse the site messes up IP adress, the site takes me to pages I dont want all the time (like the same page evrey time you use random page)

I get an "msg" to a page and an IP I've never seen, it can still be "mine" at one time or another but I did not edit, so that also reqires a "purge"

What part of: ''When viewing the page, it said "You have new messages", but clicking on the link took you to a user talk page that was not yours.'' on the Purge Requests page is so hard to get?

It dose that, nothing says why it took there, nothing says it was not an IP you had earily nothing says ANYTHING about IP's there

It never says "its cause your IP's got mixed up"

If I veiw a pager and get a msg form it, it may be becuse of an IP mix up but it dont SAY thats why.

A user talk page that is not yours = IPs being messed up. To put it simply.

Not always, I've never seen "half" of my Ip's hgeck most pepole cant TELL you their IP at any giving time, so thinking its not yours, is very common in fact, if my ip swithces it can easy switch to one ip and I get the msg BECUSE my ip is now that

If my Ip chnages and so dose most others, odds are, some where down the road I have at LEAST one person with the same ip.

an exsample, when I first joined my IP alredy had edits, I did not do these edits, my talk page had things, etc its why I made an acount.

Okay fine, anyone else can to post PROOF of what they say? not what they read in to it?

Cause I feel its a big deal to say its IP shared with someone and it only being an IP mixup...
More so when helping others.

But dont we need to know the facts?

If its an IP mix up then it can be fixed with OUT signing up, if its IP is shared only way to fix it would be to sign up...
I'm really not sure what Afvice to give now if it IS IP mix up as it be wrong to heed what they posrt on user pages...

If its an IP mix up, the advice is the same. The problem is different, the solution - the same. As I said, if you have problems - just make an account!

As Kiz is pretty fluent in the wiki, I think he has the facts.
