Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim

It is my understanding that finding the words out of order constitutes a bug so expect the worst.

Uh-oh :?

Good thing I haven't experienced THAT particular 'glitch' yet? 'Cause TBF I'm pretty sure I will eventually get the 2nd word before the 1st...

Cheers for the reply anyway :D

In my experience, you can't get words out of order. The game automatically gives you them in progression, regardless of where or when you obtain them. Case in point, the Whirlwind Sprint shout. Normally players learn the first word of this from the Greybeards, but I already had the first two words prior to even visiting them on one particular run and the NPCs commented as such noting that I had already started learning it. They then proceeded to give me the third and last word.

The people over at the Bethesda forums found a fix for this. Generally, the idea is to not place things after dropping them. What I mean is, you have to store that an item is dropped in the game's memory before moving it around and expecting it to stay.

Step 1: Drop your item(s).
Step 2: Leave your home without touching them.
Step 3: Re-enter your home and then arrange things where you want.

I've done this with my soul gems, placing them in an open container. Prior to following this method they would glitch out and the physics of the item hit boxes would cause them to accelerate when in contact with one another, firing them off at random around the room. Humorous to be sure, but not decorative.

Question! Alright, so, I have a question about terrain. Like can snow hurt you, what type of things can you use to kill your oppenent (I.E. oil spills, that you can use to light up oil and burn your enemies...) Well, that's my question... Now, answer it!

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim

Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:33 pm

Terrain can't hurt you. Falling off cliffs etc is the closest thing to terrain damage. Oil spills can be lit up to burn enemies, traps avoided for enemies to trigger and bear traps reset but that's it as far as I can think.

You can also drop certain oil lamps on their heads if you time it right.
They generally hang over oil spills too.
Makes such an inferno I tend to trigger them all even if there are no enemies. >_>

Can you become a vampire after being cured of Lycanthropy?

I've heard that you SHOULD but there's a glitch were you can't, but that's all from memory, don't know if they fixed it in a patch or what.

I got arrested and paid the fine but I can't find the jail. My character appeared outside the city guards barracks. I'm at the first town btw.

Whiterun's dungeon is located in the basement of Dragonsreach, the Jarl's castle at the top of the hill. Evidence Chest is located there.

Akiraka wrote:I think this could count as a beginner's question: Does the Perk for 15x dam with daggers work on a dagger in the left hand?

I've backstabbed with an axe in the right hand and a dagger in the left. The 15x Damage thingy is displayed during the dual-wield flurry I inflicted (along with the 6x Damage from the axe). So, yeah: a dagger in the left hand will inflict a 15x sneak-attack bonus. I have no idea if you can do the throat-slitting finisher with a left-handed strike, though.

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim

Just equip your weapon, and activate the poison in the items list.

Just a warning, the poison only lasts for one hit, then you have to poison it again.

I'm playing on PS3. I married Brelyna Maryon from the College of Winterhold and everything was lovely. I was making 100 gold off her a day and we were frolicking happily through dungeons together. Suddenly she goes missing while I'm on a dungeon quest. I wait three days and search:

The college
The Temple of Mara
All 3 of my homes

I can't remember which dungeon we were in, I'm thinking perhaps she's gotten stuck in a glitch and can't die? If she dies I am supposed to receive a condolence letter from the courier allowing me the opportunity to remarry. Its been weeks in game time and I just want to be able to take another wife. What should I do?

Hey guys I'm pretty new to Skyrim and have a bunch of newbie questions. Playing on a PS3 (if that helps)

1. Can you reset you skills?
2. Do you have to pick sides? Is there things you cannot accomplish if you remain neutral?
3. I'm more of a assassin/thief type. Should I stick with light armor? Or go with heavy.
4. If I make my own heavy armor (was browsing a thread and said Darmnic (sp) armor is the best), can I make it have stats, like + 20% bow. Or is it just armor?
5. Is there a max level?

Thanks for any help. ^_^

Hey, welcome aboard! :D

1. No. Be careful when you choose your Perks, there's no respecing.
2. Not that I know of. I was halfway through the MQ before I decided to do the Civil War stuff.
3. I'd say Light. Heavy, while having the higher Armor Ratings, slows down your movement, is harder to sneak in, and generally has less impressive Perks than Light.
4. Daedric :p Yes, you can enchant armor you make yourself. (Man that'd be lame if you couldn't)
5. Yes. 80. But, 50 is a big breakpoint.

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim

Mon Jan 02, 2012 9:43 pm

Thanks so much Akiraka!
I only just reached lv 16, so I'm still a ways away from hitting that breakpoint. What ever that is. The game gets crazy hard I assume.
Sad to hear you can't reset the skills, but I should be fine with my 3 wasted points. ^_^
Maybe when I'm a higher level I go for the heavy armor when I have the points to spear.

Thanks again~. :)

Hey, no problem :]
By breakpoint, I mean that level-ups are much harder to get after level 50; Skill increases provide far less experience. To illustrate, to reach level 80, you will have to increase every single Skill to 100. You'll reach 50 long before that. I'd guess it takes about as long (definitely as much work) to get from 50 to 80 as it does to get from 1 to 50.

EDIT: Oops, max level is 81

Why can't I poison weapons in my left hand?

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim

Wed Jan 04, 2012 2:57 pm

That's a good question actually. Have you tried unequipping the weapon in your right hand first before applying the poison? I'll test this method out tomorrow and report back. My guess would be that the game is reading the weapon in the right hand and sees that it's already poisoned?

Hiya!

I have a general question about terminology.

I've been on a hunt for information about barrel respawns/resets, and came across this page: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_talk:Containers

All throughout the page it mentions "cells." I'm confused because I'm not sure if they are referring to jail cells or something else. Can someone please tell me what is meant when people use this word in this context?

Thanks!

Hi! Welcome to the forums! :D

"Cells" are... how do I put this, the part of the world that your character is in. Like, when you enter a dungeon, that dungeon is the current cell. By "leave the cell", it's meant that you, in that case, need to leave the dungeon, so that the items/ monsters inside can respawn.
Another example are towns. When you enter a town, the entire area that you can explore without going through any doors is a cell, and every building that you have to enter by going through a door is it's own cell.
The indication that you're changing cells is a loading screen. My tech speak isn't great, but I hope this helps :D

Carlyndra, cells are game design technology and refer to regions/areas that are linked together. For instance, Helgen is one cell; Bleak Falls Barrow is another. So if they are talking about cells resetting, that refers to that.

You might also come across "zones." This relates to, say, levels: a dungeon might have two "zones" linked by a door, or any area that prompts a loading screen. Hope that makes sense! :D

And welcome to the forums!
