The 9 Holds of Skyrim/ Nordic Clans

Mon Apr 25, 2011 6:33 am

Just out of interest what do we collectively know about the Nordic Clans? Names? Characteristic? I've checked out the UESP and found a bit, but I want to see if anyone else knows something I don't.

I've found this picture where you can see 8 zones of the holds of skyrim, its from the artwork video. Maybe they divided the windhelm zone so you would have 9 holds with their own zones.

From this map we can guess about the 9 holds.

The one which can be seen directly are:
Windhelm,Riften,Solitude, Whiterun and Markath

For the other 4 its only a guess but I would say:
Falkenreath, Dawnstar for the last two I have no idea.

Winterhold and Kaarthwasten would also be possible but Winterhold is in the Windhelm zone and Kaarthwasten in the Markath...

Hi Trelares, I think that is more of a terrain map.
Have a look at these maps I found: A fan made political map- http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/1641 ... calif7.jpg
and what looks like official concept work on terrain and political- http://www.thedragonborn.com/wp-content ... rimmap.jpg

The fan made map is very nice. But for the second one, if you look a bit deeper its nearly the same I posted only with an overlay of major cities. The other thing for the second map is, its bad we dont see it really clear many areas are a bit gray....

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted it. I have a copy of another map like your's and my second, but with actual Holds/Regions overlayed, but I can't find the url I got it from (I thought that was what was at the second link, my bad ).

Edit: Okay here's a link to it. The password is: UESP_Forums

I know the Western Reach in High Rock used to be a Nordic hold during the First Empire of the Nords. But then it got retaken by the Aldmer.

I would suspect that there will some civilized Norse cultural aspects in how Skyrim's feudal system works

Chief or King

Nobles

Huscarls

commoners

peasants

There are actually Nine total:
1. Solitude's
2. The Reach's
3. The one over Dunstad Grove
4. Whiterun's
5. Falkreath Hold's
6. Rift's
7. Eastmarch's
8. Winterhold's
9. the entire Coastline
Here's a larger view of the map

I think this belongs in the Skyrim section. We don't actually know enough to treat this as lore do we? :?

Well, I'll hit the books to learn more. The point of the maps was as a starting point to see if there might be any official indications to the nine Holds. We'll try to keep it more loreish though :D.

Edit:
UESP wrote:The Reach, one of the nine Holds in Skyrim province, is easily mistaken for a typical High Rock city and probably contains more non-Nords than Nords.

Edit:
UESP wrote:only five of their names are recorded [...] Winterhold, Eastmarch, Rift, and The Pale lie to the north and east of the province and are known as the Old Holds and remain isolated from the rest of Tamriel both geographically and politically [...]the western Hold called Reach is much more cosmopolitan and members of all the races of the continent have made their homes there.
