Hi all. I hope you guys don't mind me making a thread. I'm just making this cause I want to showcase my art and have a reference for people to see as my skills get better. I'll update the OP with new drawings every night.

Great idea! Id love to see you hone your skills and grow through your art. :) I adore the shading in your last drawing, very nice. Can't wait to see more.

Thank's man. Your support is appreciated :D. Actually my shading in the last drawing was a fix. I've mentioned that I don't use erasers in my work so I actually made the shading to cover up a mistake. If you look very closely you might still be able to see it.

Hmm. It isnt very noticeable but I can sort of see an area where the shading is less consistent with the rest. Nice cover up job, I think the way it's shaded gives it a more dramatic lighting effect. Never erasing will be difficult, but I bet it will make you a better artist in the end.

First of all, there's already a group thread for posting art, we'd love to see your work there: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=28119

Your images are way too large, and most of them are sideways - you'd get a lot more comments if you resized them so they fit on the screen all at once the right way around. There are great free programs out there like the GIMP that can help you do that.

You're off to a great start - keep on drawing!

Got a headache from spending hours figuring out what was wrong with my images. Finally got it to work. Hope you like it.

Edit: Made my first portrait. Tell me if you can figure out who it is (it will tell me if I succeeded or failed).

Note: I did use an eraser on this.

I really like the eyes of Emma and Queen of the 80's, but I can't guess who the Mystery person is. Are they a person from this forum, or a famous person or...?

Do you use a camera or a scanner? It's kind of hard to make out the lines on most of these; as skullclutter said, you may want to run your stuff through GIMP, try and tweak the contrast so as to bring out your art more clearly. Another thing to remember is that going over the pencil lines (I'm assuming it's pencil?) with pen or marker first makes scanning/photographing easier. Sadly, things which look great on paper may not show up well when you try and put it on the computer!

I like the hand on your Ang drawing. Very good perspective! Facial proportions need a bit of work, though; you have a tendency to draw your eyes very high on the head, and the nose and mouth very low.

I agree with working to develop your proportions. Some of them you've done very well, but some others are like Dorostheconquerer described. Proportion can be one of the hardest things to get right. I spend a lot of time erasing and redoing facial features to try and get things straight. I have the hardest time with profile views, and arm and leg proportion when doing anything other than a standing sort of body stance. I have a tendency to give normal, well-proportioned bodies baby sized hands too... lol

Do you have any stuff to post, farore? You should show it off in Avron's Artist thread!

And yeah, faces are very difficult because the proportions are so important; even slight mistakes are glaringly obvious to most observers. This is because, as human beings, facial recognition is part of our brain's wiring; it's one of the first visual skills we develop as children, and it remains critically important as we grow up - an obsession of the subconscious. For buildings and plants and household objects, you can flub proportions and chances are nobody will notice, but faces are far less forgiving.

For example, here's a painting of Mr Dunwitty, a puppet from a new webseries: http://fav.me/d748wi4

Looks sort of OK, right? Well, I can tell you that the proportions are off. The model I was working from had a much "dopier" expression. In particular, the spacing of the eyes and the position of the irises is "off" - this was partly a technical failing on my end, and partly a conscious design decision, because I wanted Mr Dunwitty to look friendlier and more inviting than he does IRL. But it's not really such a big deal, because he's a puppet, and nobody knows who he is. The proportions aren't obvious.

Contrast with this: http://fav.me/d6w4r38

I screwed up big time on that one. Now, in my opinion, I think the proportions were actually slightly MORE model-accurate on Archie Luxury's face than they are on Dunwitty's. But because he's a human being, a creature our brains are wired to spend lots of time detecting and analyzing, the problems are far more obvious, in particular the wonky eyes and the odd perspective on his jowl fat. Don't even get me started on his hand and wristwatch, which I had to crop out of the picture before I uploaded it.

Moral of the story is: human faces aren't very forgiving, so you've got to pay a lot of attention to proportions.

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=9198

That topic has three of my drawings in it on the last page. I just do pencil sketches like Thuro, kind of the reason I've taken such an interest in his work. I think if he pushes himself and is dedicated he has really great potential, he definitely is more dedicated than I am. Those are the only three drawings I've done since highschool, and that was almost five years ago now. I use to do ink drawings only, and obviously couldn't erase either. I don't really plan on doing that again, though. Way too difficult.

You are definitely right about small facial features making all the difference. A couple of slightly misjudged features can completely throw off the entire face. It's best to try and get the basic shapes and proportions down and to add the detail once it looks about right, a lot less to correct later. In highschool my art teacher taught us to draw a basic oval, and then draw a line through the center, and then again crossways as a waypoint. Thuro, do you take an art class in school?

And just out of curiousity, Doros, what did you use to make these pictures?

This is exactly what I needed. Thanks. My current drawing (a portrait of farore) has very good proportions.

My recommendation would be to spend more time focusing on single details of a face (or whatever you're gonna draw), and then putting them all together once you've perfected them, to create a great result.

This is my best work yet (Which isn't saying a lot). Sorry about not adding your studs. I didn't feel I could draw them right so I left them out. The hair might be a little bit limp but it was the best I could draw it. Sorry.

Here's the small version.

If you want I can email you the full version. Imgur won't let me upload an image that large, or maybe its just my internet. Either way.

On a side note GIMP is a very powerful tool as I've just found out.

At Lindai. It has to be you. I can google a supermodel and draw her at any time. I want to draw real people. Sorry.
