Since it has been somewhat forgotten: If Duruza shows back up, they can start their own, and a Mod can delete this one... OR... If a mod decides to, they can start a new one (hint: Avron the Absent), or make this an Announcement. Just wanted to get things rolling, if it is still going to happen.

Hark good people of the UESP. I have an announcement to make!

Okay, so the September portion of the Competition really must get under-way, and we're somewhat flexible as to how people want to do things.

Here's the idea as it currently stands:

Any member may submit an entry of any medium, relating to the chosen UESP Great House. This might be a portrait of a member of the House, a landscape of a location related to the House. An item, a building, any piece of visual media, provided that it has a a little bit of a story behind it (even if you don't put that story into words), building the Great House in some way.

You might also write a story, a journal, a conversation (which you might even record). It might be directly about a member, a place, a piece of the House's history. It might be a profile, a letter. Anything you can imagine, but make it in some way related.

There are various other things you may do, none of them wrong. Perhaps you will design a banner for the new House? Perhaps a piece of music that fits the House's 'personality'. The aim is for as many people to compete as possible, and you can start your entry, even today! (although I know a lot of people are going back to school around this time of year).

The winner will be decided by a vote (in the coming month I assure you that a more efficient system will be decided upon, to ensure that things run smoothly this time around), and will be featured in the article that will be constructed based on the House, in the style of the UESP Wiki's own Great House articles (which you might check out for inspiration if you're out of ideas for the comp). Further, this artist and creator will earn the peoples' adoration and praise, as will all the competitors (is only to a lesser extent :P), and contributors to what hopefully will be an enjoyable Comp for all.

Side note: Veck, you may resubmit your image for this Comp, perhaps you could write a sentence or two giving it background, but even so, it is more than acceptable as is.

P.S. We'll look at setting up a new thread for the September portion, but in the meantime, hurry off to your easels and desks, there are many great entries to be had.

Also, now is the time to seek clarification. I hope I made some sense just now, but if not, be sure to let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The House that Won: Great House Andrethi http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=24111&start=16

Spoiler:
Quote:
Finally here is my entry, a little bearer than I had hoped, but all things and commitments considered, none too shabby:

House Name: Great House Andrethi House Location: Eastern Skyrim and Southern Solstheim
House Capital: Gah'ruhn (Ruins of Fort Frostmoth)

House Overview:
Formed from the ashes of the former power of Morrowind prior to the Second Arnesian War with Argonia, the House is a conglomeration of the remnants of the five Houses of 3rd Era Morrowind. Their alliance with Winter Hold has seen their power spread from their base on Solstheim, into the city as they plan to aid their brothers in retaking Morrowind and crushing the Argonians once again.

The House is supported by a contingent of former Redoran warriors, led by Drathas Andrano, supplemented by Telvanni Mages and followers of Varon Andrethi, and the few remnants of the Ordinators of Ghostgate, who escaped the Red Day through sheer luck, under the astute leadership of Indoril Ralvalas. The House is strongly comprised of members of Houses Dres and Hlaalu, who lost their homes in the initial invasion, and many of whom travelled to Gah'ruhn after hearing news of its construction as they fled North, away from the bloodshed.

House Background/History:
At the Battle of Ald'ruhn, House Redoran suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of Mehrunes Dagon's hordes and their ancestral home was lost, a shocking blow to the Noble House of Warriors. After the horrific events of the Red Day, House Telvanni was crippled by the loss of Vvardenfell and the Zafirbel Bay and many of the Telvanni Council were lost to the calamity. After the Argonians poured in from Black Marsh, House Dres was decimated by the invading horde, facing great destruction at the hands of their foes. House Indoril, already weakened by the civil war, also bore the brunt of the invasion, as did House Hlaalu, it's Imperial allies gone and it's power depleted.

In the events that followed these dark times, Varon Andrethi led an exodus from the Telvannis District, through the Deshaan Plains and into the Velothi Mountains. While many Dunmer chose to remain in their homeland under their former banners, many others fled into Skyrim and Solstheim, and many from a range of backgrounds, joined Andrethi on the path to the West. Instrumental in Andrethi's escape into Solstheim was Drathas Andrano, a relatively prominent member of House Redoran, who allowed Andrethi and his followers to pass through Redoran territory onto Solstheim, accompanying them to the ruined Fortress of Frostmoth, where they proceeded to establish the city of Gah'ruhn, after a brutal struggle with the local Nordic populace.

House Specialisation (Favoured Skills, etc.):
House Andrethi specialises in the traditional arts of Dunmeri combat, a war-hardened faction scarred by the brutal nature of the dawn of the 4th Era. Members of the House are adept in the arts of bow and blade and share a knowledge of the Destructive and Mystical Schools of Magic. The warriors of the House prefer the medium armours of the native Dunmeri Bonemold and learn to wear it like a second skin. These hard times sometimes call for diplomacy, but members of House Andrethi must also be ready for battle at any time, and must keep their arms and armour in good condition at all times.
Favoured Attributes: Strength, Agility
Favoured Skills: Long Blade, Marksman, Destruction, Medium Armour, Mysticism, Speechcraft, Armour

House Politics:
House Andrethi remains peaceful and cooperative with all five major Great Houses across Morrowind, however as always, the other Houses remain distrusting of those outside their ranks, particularly those who many see as having abandoned Morrowind in its hour of greatest need.

On Solstheim, House Andrethi upholds an uneasy peace with its northern neighbours, the Skaal, and although the Dunmer clashed bitterly with the local Nordic populace from Skyrim, the Skaal had remained detached from the conflict. Despite this conflict on Solstheim, and the tension between the Dunmer and Nords, House Andrethi has remained friendly with the County of Winter Hold, and this has protected the House to some extent, from its detractors and foes in Skyrim, with many Dunmer settling in Eastern Skyrim, stretching the House's borders onto the mainland.

The House remains supportive of the Temple, however membership within its ranks is by no means obligatory for members of the House. While the House has few enemies amongst the Dunmeri peoples, one notable exception is the Cammona Tong, who have clashed with House Andrethi in attempts to establish their Skooma trade on Solstheim, within the House's territory. This adds a further level of complexity to the struggles of the House, as they face not only the hostilities from the West, but also from its own peoples, all barriers to the ultimate goal of reclaiming the South and restoring the glory and honour of the Dunmeri peoples.

The House allows members of any race join its ranks, however beast races are still disliked and distrusted by most members, still bitter over the Argonian invasion. The House also recognises the remnants of the Imperial Legion and Imperial Guilds, however these factions do not have strong followings within Andrethi heartland.

The House abhors vampires and necromancers almost as highly as Argonians, and as such, vampires are not allowed to join the House, and any member practising necromancy is likely to face expulsion, exile or even execution.

House Leader:
House Andrethi is guided by a High Council comprising of five Councillors, Drathas Andrano, Fendryn Dres, Thoryn Indarys and Indoril Ralvalas and the leader of the Council, Varon Andrethi.

House Ranks:
Grand Magnate
Councilman
House Father
House Brother
House Cousin
Kinsman
Lawman
Oathman
Retainer
Hireling

House Religion: Officially, House Andrethi is a loyal supporter of the Temple and the House follows in the worship of the Saints, particularly of the Great Saints Veloth and Nerevar, who guide and protect the Dunmer even in the dark days in the aftermath of the Red Day. However, Daedra worship is also strong within the ranks of the House, and can even stretch further than the worship of the Anticipations.

House Maxim: Austerity, Reverence, Duty

So using the Winning House from August. Submit your Submissions, based off of the above information given for House Andrethi.

Sorry about the delay everyone. I've been busy getting ready for my exchange trip, and did not want to start something I knew I couldn't be here to finish. Goblin voice will be taking care of things, with the help of Avron, who is still on her break, they just have a few things to iron out.

Fell free to work on your entries, as I know a few I've spoken to privately have, expect more information soon, and possibly a new thread authored by Gv, giving him full control over editing, creating a poll, etc.

Just a few quick updates from my end:

» I will be more than happy to extend this CotM into October given its late start and hiccup here or there, if anyone would be interested. If you plan on participating in this, please give me a solid "Yes, ma'am!" for support!

» I am working with a few members to direct this in my absence.

» Remember, this is a community competition. You are all welcome to participate with both entries and ideas for how it ought to go. Don't be shy! If you and don't wish to post in this thread, feel free to send me a PM. I happily welcome all of them and still read them in my absence, promises!

Remember to use CotM threads for discussions as well as submissions. They are whatever you make them to be.

I was sort of asked to get this going for September, if the members are still wanting to do one.

As members, please make a comment here, so that we know if there is still time, and interest on doing a Competition of the Month for September.

This is my thought on it:

Start Date: Yesterday, or the day before.
End Date for Submissions: Friday, 30 September
Voting Starts: Saturday, 01 October
Voting Ends: Friday, 07 October

This way members have 2 weeks for submissions, and October can start on 01 October, so it is given a full month. No need to wait for September's to end to start on Octobers, as long as Septembers is closed for submissions. Although, plans for October should be starting soon, so it can kick off on time.

- Anyone can submit anything, as long as it is related to the New Great House Andrethi. See above post for the info.

- Rather than have only one winner. If there is more than one type of medium, then I will set up multiple polls/topics for voting. There must be at least two submissions for a type of medium, by different members, for a medium to be set up for seperate voting.

Example: If there are two or more hand made Pictures, and two or more digital Pictures, then they would be considered seperate mediums for voting. Otherwise all pictures would be considered as one medium.

Example: If there are two or more storys, and two or more Poems, and two or more Journals, then they would be considered seperate also, so there would be three writing mediums.

It would help if when you make your entries/submission, that you note which type of medium you are wanting this to be considered for.

- Since there are multiple mediums for this competition, then members can submit multiple times, as long as it is in a different medium.

- Members can vote for each medium, since they will be in different polls. Only one vote per medium/poll will be allowed.

I think that this is short and simple, and should make everyone happy, by opening things up to everyone, so things should get started quickly. It would also make the possiblity of more entries, as more members could participate in their medium of choice, and some could possibly make multiple entries/submissions.

I understand that this might not be the best plan, but I think that it will work, with what time we have left.

We do still have some time to iron out the details, but the key is for everyone to have some sort of an idea what is going on, so that they can get started, with what little time is left of September.

The timeline Jeff has proposed looks good, I will leave it to Gv and Avron though. I am a bit reluctant about seperate polls, just becuase there may be many different polls with the range of mediums avaliable; however I am not opposed to the idea.

Thanks for letting us know Chaos.

I added a poll option, so that we can get an idea how many, if any (besides Chaos), are planning on doing this month.

I would hate for Chaos to put in the time and work for something, and be the only one. ...so please let us know what your plans are.

It would be rather awkward that the only person that made a submission was the runner-up of last month's Competition...like repenting for a sin I didn't commit...

Changing the poll will reset the votes, so nope, I won't do that. Just do what you can. I was just trying to get a feel if others are planing on doing something this month.

So far I think that Jeff's plan looks good, and there seems to be interest, so I think we might be able to just run with this timeframe? I have spoken to people who are workingon things, but also those who are away on holidays at the moment and probably haven't even seen this thread yet. Unfortunate time of year maybe? C'est la vie, non?

I finally decided to stop messing with them and 'finished' the Andrethi banner with my meager skills at digital art
Below are the two worn versions of the banner, why two? because I'm indecisive. (having no clue whether it should look worn/burnt or over-stylized-daedric)
Spoiler:
Image Image

Here are some of the original designs (with or out color swaps), progressing towards the final 'template' (I had other concept designs, but found many of them too complex and lacking in simple charm)
Spoiler:
ImageImageImageImage

What are the shapes and what do they represent?
  • I decided on a slightly off looking triangle since it is a common shape between the temple and Indoril, along with Redoran's 'bug' is shaped with a similar 'downward point'
  • The hands (yes those are hands) are a replacement for Hlaalu's scales
  • Moon and Star are there for obvious reason, the most important of which is that it is a common theme for the Dunmer
  • Below the hands is a vaguely shaped 'mountain' representing not just Vvardenfel's Red Mountain, but also the Andrethi's ties to Winter Hold
  • Within the Circle is the Daedric letter for V, standing for Velothi, the Chimer Saint (so-on-and-so-forth) with the 'roots' below that indicating their heritage (and also a slight nod to the Telvanni's Banner)
  • The order from bottom to top implying the Dunmer being supported by their ancestors

Extras:
I originally had a design that was meant to incorporate a little bit of every House's Banner(One of my older drawings that was too 'busy' and looking more like something you'd find in an abandoned cathedral than a flag), but I was lacking any kind of basis for House Dres. So I set out to make my own version of Dres using what little concept art we do have of them. The result being something I'm much more (genuinely) happy with...
    Spoiler:
    Image Image Image

The shape is taken from the front profile of a Nix-hound with some Scrib 'spikes' and a pseudo sun (With sun 'rays' within the main shape) at the apex (All meant to point towards agriculture in Morrowind)
The other shapes within are just similar designs from the concept art
Why Maroon on Gold? It looked more Morrowind-esc than my original idea of Dark green on Gold
