Platinum, just because third versions have had the most features out of any other main-series Pokémon games.

Platinum is the 3rd game of the Diamond and Pearl series correct? Soul silver is a remake of an older game, no current (Diamond?) remake.

I would get Soul Silver myself, it has 2 regions instead of 1 plus I'm sure that it has newer features added.

Platinum is indeed the third version for Diamond/Pearl. SoulSilver is a remake of Silver, released for the GBC all those years ago.

Err, SoulSilver came after Platinum. I'm pretty sure that SoulSilver has the same features and functions as Platinum.

Platinum is probably cheaper by now, whereas SoulSilver was just released a few days ago.

Platinum probably sucks, whereas SouldSilver is a more-than-safe bet. :P

They're not that intimidating. Once you get past the new Pokémon, abilities, and the Gen IV physical/special split, they're easy to understand.

So... I just got SoulSilver today. I thought Wal-Mart had just HeartGold left, but I didn't see their main display for the games.

Anyway, I've just left Ilex Forest with HM01 and I'm headed to... wherever... I have no idea where I'm supposed to go next. I also have no idea what other Pokémon I should have on my team.

Preferably a Pokemon that can deal with the next gym leader's Miltank. The thing abused rollout in the original version, and from what I remember, does so in this version as well. Since rollout is a rock type, do not use a flying or electric type. Try to snag a pokemon that can use disable on Miltank (Drowzee? Gastly?). The next gym leader, Morty, has only Ghost/Poison types I believe, so pack a psychic type.

For Whitney: I would get a fighting type, but after further research, it seems I can't get one yet. (stupid version-exclusive Pokémon... ) I caught a Gastly in Sprout Tower, but I haven't trained it yet. I'll see how well that works.

For Morty: Psychic is weak to ghost, so I think a dark type would do better. But I can't get one of those yet, either, so I'm forced to use something that's neutral against ghost (like my Quilava) and out-level his ghost-types.

I recommended a psychic type because of all Morty's pokemon are Ghost/Poison; which are weak to psychic. (Plain Ghost type is effective against psychic, however.)

I know poison is weak to psychic, but again, that's a double-edged sword: we'd both be strong against each other, and it would come down to whoever has the higher level.

Yeah, I'd have to say so.

I've decided on using an Onix against Whitney (no, I still haven't fought her yet), since it resists both of Miltank's attacks and the one I'm using is female and therefore immune to Miltank's Attract.

But you get the TM for it when you beat her.

In other news: Buying the TMs for Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam at the Game Corner is now officially next to impossible. Outside of Japan, there are no slot machines or attendants selling coins in the game corner. Instead, you play a pseudo-minesweeper game called Voltorb Flip. If I'm lucky, I'll get 81 coins. That sounds like a lot, but not when you consider that the TMs for the three aforementioned moves cost 10,000 each. And now, they only carry 6 TMs: Substitute (2,000 coins), Swords Dance (4,000), and Rest (6,000), plus the fire/ice/lightning attacks.

There's a single good thing about it, though: the guy who I guess you could call the GM of Voltorb Flip gives you a coin case, so you don't need to go searching for one.

Not if you beat her in Silver, and most of the trainers in any Pokemon game are male; which mean that they have male pokemon. So if you have mainly male pokemon it's useless.

Edit: Attract didn't exist in Silver I don't think.

It's on Pokémon Stadium 2, so I'm pretty sure it was on Silver.

And actually, I have a mostly female team; even my starter is female.

I have half and half incidentally.

Anyways, I learned that a Raticate is really helpful against Morty. Since it can learn bite, sucker punch, and crunch. All are dark, all super-effective against Ghost.

I ended up using a Gyarados against Morty. I just spammed Bite the whole time and took him down with minimal effort.

The only Johto gym I have left now is the Blackthorn one, which I'm pretty sure is Dragon-type. Either way, my Gyarados should sweep it with minimal effort with its newly-learned Ice Fang. In fact, that's my next stop.

In other news: For some reason, I found catching Dialga and Palkia on Platinum (both legendaries, if you don't know) easier than catching a Delibird on this game. I had it down to 1 HP and my Love Ball failed. Twice. It's supposed to multiply the catch rate by 8x if your Pokémon and the wild one are of opposite genders, which they were.

I just realized that I'm 2-10 levels above my current stage in the game.
I'm going to take down Pryce after I've finished my homework, but that won't be much of a challenge.

Team:

  • Typhlosion, Lv. 38
    • Flamethrower
    • Flame Wheel
    • Swift
    • Lava Plume
  • Hitmonchan, Lv. 37
    • Sky Uppercut
    • Fire Punch
    • Ice Punch
    • Thunder Punch
  • Gengar, Lv. 36
    • Hypnosis
    • Dark Pulse
    • Shadow Ball
    • Dream Eater
  • Raticatem Lv. 34
    • Super Fang
    • Crunch
    • Hyper Fang
    • Bite
  • Pikachu (Named Emma), Lv. 32
    • Slam
    • Thunderbolt
    • Thunder Wave
    • Double Team
  • Fearow, Lv. 35
    • Aerial Ace
    • Pursuit
    • Fly
    • Agility
Probably take the Elite Four on tomorrow.

PS: I find it very, very, stupid that Emma got knocked out with Bite. OHKO, WTF?

On my current playthrough of Gold all my pokemon are named after characters from Morrowind. My totodile is called DivaythFyr (it just fits without the space), I have a rattatta called Fargoth and I forgot who's called Crassius...
