I just beat Pokemon Red for the first time ever. Even better is the fact that my pokemon were 20 levels down from my rival's. Taking advantage of type effectiveness ftw. (The victory was having my level 43 Gyarados use surf on his level 65 Charizard, which had used Rage two turns earlier, so there was nothing he could do to stop me.)
My Hall of Fame is:
Beedrill, lvl 42 (Twin Needle, Pin Missile, Rage, Focus Energy)
Venusaur, lvl 43 (Cut, Body Slam, Growth, Razor Leaf)
Marik (Gyarados), lvl 44 (Blizzard, Dragon Rage, Strength, Surf)
Marcel (Mr. Mime), lvl 46 (Confusion, Mega Kick, Light Screen, Flash)
Nidoqueen, lvl 46 (Earthquake, Body Slam, Thunderbolt, Counter)
Vileplume, lvl 41 (Sleep Powder, Solar Beam, Acid, Mega Drain)

Not sure how you managed that. 20 levels below? I think thats impossible. Even your super effective attacks wouldn't do that much damage, and at that level you are hoping to do as much damage as possible before your over-leveled opponent gets an attack. The issue with that is you will almost never move first, and a pokemon that is 20 levels above you will do a decent amount of damage even with non-effective attacks. A super effective attack against you would probably be close to a on hit KO.
Plus that team looks like it would get killed by Lance before Gary too. Only one pokemon with an ice attack, and its Gyarados. Lance's Dragonite has electric attacks and would certainly move before you. One hit from an electric attack at 20 levels under, and its a one hit KO. Another thing, that is an awful move pool for your team. In fact just thinking back through the Red E4, I don't see how you could beat any of them 20 levels below. Its a simple fact of being too underleveled.

No offense meant, but sorry, I think I am going to call BS on this. (Unless you got pics)

Don't underestimate the incompetence of the AI, gator. Twitch Plays Pokémon managed to take down Lance's Dragonite with an underleveled Venomoth. Venomoth's poison-typing caused Dragonite to spam agility over and over.

having one pokemon that under-leveled take down a single over-leveled due to AI stupidity is one thing. But even with incompetent AI I don't see an entire team 20 levels below taking down the E4.

Just started up a Firered playthrough. Currently only have my starter, a level 10 Bulbasaur, and a level 6 Caterpie called Heimlich.

I could get pics... but my Nidoqueen was the one that took Lance's Dragonite, for much the same reason that TPP made it. Gyarados only took the dragonairs, Nidoqueen took his Gyarados, Aerodactyl and Dragonite with Thunderbolts and mass body slams on the dragonite. (Crits ignore status changes in gen 1, and the dragonite kept spamming barrier and agility, the first couple rounds I tried using counter, only to realize that his dragonite is one stupid creature, and started attacking.) I really just exploited type advantages out the wazoo.

Against Bruno I had Mr. Mime and Venusaur take his fighting types and rock types respectively.
Against Lorelai I had my Vileplume use sleep powder, followed up by Solar Beams and Mega Drains, it helps that they were all water type in addition to being ice. (Except the Jynx, which I had Beedrill take care of exploiting it's psychic typing.)
Against Agatha I had Beedrill take the first gengar (it was really close.) followed by Nidoqueen using earthquake on the other gengar, haunter and arbok and thunderbolt on the Golbat.
I've already described the battle against Lance.
And against my Rival I used Gyarados to take the Pidgeot (blizzard followed by dragon rage), against Alakazam I had my Mr. Mime use light screen followed by confusions until the Alakazam got confused and eventually beat itself to death. For Rhydon I had Nidoqueen use earthquake. (The Rhydon only knows normal type attacks.) For Exeggutor I got Beedrill for 4x effectivness. (It also kept spamming Hypnosis regardless of if he was asleep because of the psychic type deal, Pokeflute for the win.) Gyarados was Vileplume's job, using the same sleep powder combo as before. And lastly the Charizard was the easy part, having Gyarados use surf for the win, because the Charizard used Rage because it had to decide between Slash and Rage because they wouldn't use a not very effective move, and it used rage once which made it helpless for the rest of the battle. So it was dealing crap damage as my Gyarados killed it.

So all those fights, and an ungodly amount of Lemonades from Celadon later, I won.

Hmph, ye of little faith.

Also, I think the Helix thing has maybe gone too far: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/recognize-first-march-2014-national-helix-day-be-observed-annually-all-subsequent-firsts-march/vcPGF0Tk

That must have taken a long time. I usually end up overleveled by the time I get to the E4 in any version

They were all very long fights, and I didn't mention the Revives and other items involved. It was a pain, but it helps me feel like an amazing Pokemon trainer for pulling it off.

My goal was to beat the Twitch Plays Pokemon guys, so I didn't have time to level grind. If I had it would have been a lot easier, that's for sure.

Pokémon needs literal carpet sharks. Though I'd probably make it Psychic with Levitate.

I posted this in General Discussion, but in case you missed it, Nintendo's turning off wi-fi services for a lot of original DS and Wii games in May. So this includes all the Pokemon games for the original DS and Wii (even though, for example, Black/White/2 aren't all that old).

I knew that, though I always confuse its name with Chimecho.

Fakemon of the day: Ghost/Normal Schrödinger's cat.

In all my years of playing Pokemon, I don't think that I've ever actually battled a wild chinchou or lanturn. Must keep choosing the wrong versions.

Chinchou has never been version exclusive in any of the handheld games, and was only absent in firered/leafgreen. You're the worst fisherman.

I have a kingler, the nature is adamant and the status ability is something I couldn't remember without opening up heartgold again. That said, I could trade you, however you have to pay money for pokemon bank so all my older gen pokemon are stuck either in heartgold or black 2.

Aaaaaactually...you can use it free for some trial period, I forget if it's 24 hours or 48 hours or a week or whatever. You just download it and blam.

...I already used mine for uhhh...to get the Celebi, I believe, yeah.

Yeah, I'm too lazy to bother with the free trial, it would take more patience than I have in order to get all my pokemon to my Y version in 24 hours.
