I don't know why. I was just thinking about how she hadn't posted in the GD in a few days, and that made me sad.

It's funny how even through text, people have different ways of talking. You notice when people aren't around.

Aww, that's nice, Cassandra.
I remember when I wasn't on for a couple of weeks and you commented on it when I was back, and I appreciated that.

I know what you mean about people's different ways of talking. It's like a recipe. When, for example, the salt is missing, you notice it's not there.

I think I remember that time, too. I miss all of you when you aren't around.

I try not to think of the day when everyone's moved on with their lives... What a sad day that will be.

Aww, yeah, that will be.

There'll just be one or two folk from now...

(Also, same goes for you. That day you went to Toronto the other week, I was thinking 'where's Cass got to?' )

Aww, really? That's so nice. I'll be missing y'all when I go off to camp this summer.

It's only 4 weeks, this time. Same as last year. It isn't so bad. ^-^

Aw, enough of the gloom. :(

I need input. Call it narcissism if you will (it really really isn't), but I like to play as myself in RPGs. ...What TES race(s) do I seem like?

Four weeks is ages. What kind of camp is it?

@Baloth

Anyway, I'd say Nord, maybe? I'm not very good at this sort of thing.

@Aarah: It's your classic overnight summer camp, I think (I say this having never been to any other camps). Anyway, I'm doing the Leaders In Training program this year, so I spend the first 2 weeks as a camper, learning leadership skills and such, and the second 2 weeks working at the camp alongside senior staff.

Sounds fun!

My only Summer camp knowledge comes from watching American movies, so I'm picturing log cabins beside a lake, surrounded by woods.

Yup, that's exactly the type of camp it is. I've been to the same one for the past 5 years, which is really nice.

Do you meet up with friends from previous years too?

One of my Summer camp films is The Addams Family 2. So I hope that's not how events transpire at real camps. :P

Not all the time, but this year for sure I know a bunch of people I know from last year are going (last year I did this 4-week intensive camp with only 12 campers, so we all got to know each other really well).

Luckily I have not experienced anything like that. You never know, though...

I'm not sure if I like the word 'intensive' put between the four week camp.
It's a harsh word, that's not normally used to describe something nice.

Images of screaming drill sergeants, 10 mile runs, and buckets of sweat and tears come to mind.

We were woken up at 6:00 the first morning and forced to go on a 5k run before breakfast. Fun! Or, you know, after getting back from our first canoe trip (4 days), we were dropped off a ways away from our lodgings and had to run all the way back. Fun fun! And on the last day, we were woken up at 6:00 again and had to swim across the lake. Fun fun fun!

I make it sound bad but it genuinely was the best 4 weeks of my life. I mean, those were the 4 weeks where I kissed a toad, got stuck in a tripping barrel, solo portaged a canoe 500m (the wrong direction), earned my Bronze Med, and slept out on a beach under the stars (among other things). Oh, so wonderful.

So, so many questions.
Why did you kiss a toad? (hoping for a Prince?)
What's a tripping barrel?
Where did the canoe end up?
What was the bronze medal for?
What were the other things you slept under? :wat:

(Feel free to answer as few or many as you like).

camp stories ahead:
1) We got points for doing various things (the person with the most points at the end of the 4 weeks got a prize). Me, being competitive, had to try as many of them as possible. And one of them was kissing a toad. I was honestly so disgusted. I had to get one of the leaders to hold it for me because this toad was big, man. Ew. It's not something I plan on doing again.

2) A tripping barrel is a watertight plastic barrel that you bring food in while tripping. This kind of thing. Again, for points, you had to fit in one. So I did. And then I got stuck. And it took around 5 people to get me out, if I remember correctly. And again, it's not something I plan on ever doing again.

3) 500m out on a rural road in Quebec. See, I'm not used to solo portaging (I'm not the strongest person out there. Not particularly big, either). But for points, you had to solo portage a canoe for 200m. So I tried it. The only problem is that the canoe went down over my eyes, so I couldn't see where I was going. And the path had a fork. And I went the wrong way. And I had the feeling I was going the wrong way. But what if I wasn't, and just hadn't walked far enough? So I walked until I was absolutely certain that I'd gone at least 200m and put the canoe down. Well, there I was, alone in rural Quebec. And there was no way I was going to pick up that canoe again. So I walked back and got one of the strong guys to come and carry it back for me (I'm really really sorry, Ray).

4) It's a swimming/first-aid level here. You get Bronze Med, then Bronze Cross, then your Life Guard certifications. Not something I ever thought I'd do, let alone be able to do, so I was quite happy with myself for passing the exam.

5) I more meant "I did these things, among things". I guess the only other things I slept under were... a tent, a cabin, and the sun (being weak=more time princessing)? I slept on a bus, too. In a really damp shirt (again, for points, I wore the same shirt for 14 days straight. And on the last day of our 10-day canoe trip, it rained. But I couldn't take my shirt off, so I was just very uncomfortable).

While perhaps not great at the time, those activities sound pretty good. Well, maybe not the toad...or the barrel...or the shirt...or the canoe...ok, maybe they don't sound very pleasant even afterwards, but I bet they were good experiences in the longrun. (And make for a great story).

My last question is...did you get the most points?

Yes, they make for good stories. And good memories. Most of them I'd never want to do again, but all of them I'm happy I did.

Alas, I did not. Came in 3rd. The guy who won, Ray, was super athletic and able to do things I physically couldn't. The guy who came in second beat me by a tiny bit, because I spent my free time watching the guy from Spain catching fish with his hands, rather than memorizing a chapter of the Bible (which is what the guy who beat me did). But it's okay. I placed. And had fun.

Aww. But congrats for third! That's still impressive.
And the winner is the one who carried your canoe back, so his good deed reaped good fortune.
Do you know what the prize was?

A Spanish manual fish catcher? Points!

Thanks. ^-^ And yep, if anyone other than me was going to win, I'm glad it was him. The prize was a super nice hunting knife and good-quality tent.

Right? David from Spain, man. He had some sweet skills. He was also hilarious, despite (or perhaps because of) his limited English. And yes, he did get points for his fish-catching. Because that's impressive as flip.

Those are cool prizes.

So I'm assuming this year's camp isn't an intensive one, just regular?

Yeah, this one's all leadership-focused. So a lot more smallgroups and reflective times. And only one canoe trip. And hopefully less running.
