Skyrim at War

Thu Dec 29, 2011 5:07 pm

At the moment I'm looking for anyone interested in a strategy RP/game with both strategy and RPing elements.

Each player will take control of a region of Skyrim and have a number of settlements and armies placed under their command. Each player's aim is to take control of half the settlements on the map by eliminating other players and capturing their settlements. The game rotates through different phases or rounds, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. In Spring through Summer, units are moved around the map and battle commences, in winter the fighting ceases and there is a brief rest period. Troop movements occur through secret communication with the DM and all moves in a season occur simultaneously. Victory occurs through numbers, with a possible random dice-roll element.

We shall be using this map of Skyrim, although I will be editing it based upon the number of players that join.

Applications are as simple as filling out a Character sheet for your Jarl, however I can't guarantee all applications will be accepted due to limitations as far as numbers. I'm looking for a minimum of 5 and maximum of 9 players to begin, after which point I'll update you on the rules, mechanics and the map.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The white lines you see indicate possible movement, travelling via roads equates to faster travel, decreasing the time the defender has to fortify their position with more armies, however roads lead to population centres which are harder to pass through than terrain, because they have armies.

Each player will begin with an army in each settlement they hold. Every turn you will gain an additional army for every 4 settlements you hold, with Winterhold and Windhelm counting for two and beginning with two as a result of the Capital status and Legion respectively.

The 'turns' are Spring, Summer, Fall, Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer, etc. We begin in Spring.

Moves can be made in all seasons bar Winter, winter allows for diplomacy and for players to build up armies (you still get extra armies in Winter).

The moves are PMed to the DM, (that's me). All players move simultaneously. Moves are:
  • Hold - To issue a hold is to order the piece not to move (and to defend its current position.) The syntax for a hold order is F Bla H (fleet in Blacklight holds.) Any unit that is not issued another order will be assumed to hold.
  • Move - Armies may be ordered to move from the land province they currently occupy to an adjacent land province (regardless of whether it is occupied.) The syntax for a move order is A Ran-Mol (army in Ranyon-Ruhn to Molagreahd).
If you move into a province that would otherwise be vacant, or if you attack with more force than the current occupant defends, you will successfully move into the province. If you move to an occupied province on the same turn that the current occupant leaves the province, the move will be successful, or likewise if you move uncontested to a vacant province. The following situations will result in failure to move:
Attempting to move to an occupied province with insufficient force to oust the current occupant (fails)
Attempting to move to a province to which another unit of equal force also attempts to move (bounce, nothing moves)
Attempting to move to a province to which another unit of greater force also attempts to move (fails)
  • Support (defensive) -By offering defensive support to a unit you are essentially agreeing that the unit has the right to stay in its current location. You may offer support to a unit in any province to which the supporting unit could have moved (adjacent, land for armies, etc.)
By supporting a unit defensively, you increase the defensive strength of the unit by one during that turn. There is no limit to the number of units which may support you except the practical limit of board layout.
If the unit you are supporting is issued a move order, your support is invalid, even if the move order fails (you can't defensively support a unit that is on the march).
If the unit with which you are supporting is attacked by a foreign unit, the support is cut and rendered invalid (you can't defend someone else if you have to defend yourself.)
The syntax for defensive support is A Kra S Riv (army in Kragenmoore supports Riverbridge).
Note: A defensive Support move in a person's own territory may cover the distance of two moves. e.g. Dragonbridge can support Dunstad Grove.
  • Support (offensive) - Similar to defensive support, through offensive support you increase the force of an attack (move) order. In order to render offensive support, the supporting unit must be otherwise able to issue a move order to the destination of the attack. It is NOT necessary to be able to move to the origin of the attack.
You may support any player's attack; it does not have to be your own. There is no limit to the amount of offensive support you may receive except the practical limit imposed by the board. If the unit you support does not make the move you supported, your support is rendered invalid. If you are attacked by a foreign unit EXCEPT the target of the attack you are supporting, your support is cut. Exception to the exception: If you are dislodged by the target of the attack you are supporting, your support is cut.
The syntax for offensive support is F Alm S Mou-Adr (Fleet in Almalexia supports Mournhold to Alt Drethan)

Note: You may only commence an attack on a Hold Capital in Spring or Fall.

Battles occur when two armies meet. I will roll die proportionate to the number of armies each side has, defenders have a defenders bonus, which will equate to +1. In the event of a draw the opposing army retreats. In the event of a victory of less than or equal to 2 the loser retreats but survives. A victory of 3 or more and the loser's army is destroyed. In the event that one side has more armies than the other, the highest rolls are counted (so more armies means more chance of success), however, if one force is 3 times that of another (e.g. An army from Amol attacks Windhelm ( which has two armies), which receives aid from Dragon Wood) the smaller force is automatically the loser, and the dice roll determines simply their survival or destruction (so don't just go wildly attacking).

In addition, an attack on a Hold Capital must last for two seasons (which is why attacks can only begin in Spring and Fall). Note that this gives defenders a chance to increase defensive support.

At the end of each round I'll post an updated map. This is the first.

Just on assassins and spies, you can give an order to use one when you send in your other orders, and I will roll a series of dies to determine how successful the assassin/spy was, whether they managed to escape and whether they were compromised, potentially revealing who sent them - a triple dice roll (success, survival/capture and secrecy -i.e. whether they pull off the hit without implicating the person who hired the Hit), however, spies and assassins may only be used once a cycle (year) and not used simultaneously as spies are available leading into all rounds bar Winter and assassins only leading into Winter.

His physical traits include a great physical build with him being tall and a muscular build. Character Name: Jarl Bethany Harsh-Winter
Race: Nord
Gender: Female
Age: 43

Description: Jarl Bethany is widely considered to be the smartest woman in Skyrim. She is a natural politician, she is analytical and a natural tactician. She is fair with her people but has a general rule that she does not negotiate under hostile situations, and refuses to be threatened. Jarl Bethany is smaller than most Nord women. Her softer face doesn’t match her sharp, dark brown eyes. Bethany wears robes (Identical to Jarl Laila’s). She has long copper-colored hair tied back in a ponytail and wears a golden circlet.

Background: 23 years ago, the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold lead a coup on Jarl Aden the Elder, killing him and becoming the new Jarl. Bethany gathered most of the disbanded guards under Jarl Aden and marched on Winterhold, taking the city and killing the Arch-Mage. Several nobles inside the court and mages in the College were executed for their crimes against Jarl Aden and Bethany took the position of Jarl by popular demand of anti-College citizens.

After the takeover Bethany personally chose the new Arch-Mage in the college, a less experienced Altmer wizard who was more of a puppet. He has matured more over the years and is more independent now. He is also one of the Jarl’s Thanes.

Other Information: Her Houscarl is a large and intimidating Nord knight called Donner. Her steward is her younger brother Thorold. Bethany has many Thanes, including Javiel, the Arch-Mage. Bethany’s ace in the hole is the fact that her houscarl is a werewolf. Because of this, Bethany is always very confident when she is with her Houscarl.

Character Name: Jarl/Queen(Self-styled) Ieastra Bloodheart
Race: Reachman!
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Description: Extremely morbid and cunning, Ieastra isn't intelligent, but has a fine understanding for plots and tactics, planning in general. Ieastra is a burning Reachman nationalist, and aspires to separating the Reach from the rest of Skyrim.
Background: Thrust to power at a young age due to internal power struggles, a group of nobles put her on the throne to gain more power. After realising that Ieastra wasn't the spineless girl she seemed like, they tried to remove her like they did to her father. This backfired horribly though, and they all got executed in extremely barbaric manners. Ieastra is thus a bit paranoid, but holds her realm in an iron hand despite her age.
Other Information: Ieastra has effectively killed all nobles in the country, leaving her as absolute monarch. She considers herself too good to have advisors, only relying on Generals and Army commanders due to the fact that she can't be more than one place at once.
Colour: Yellow

Spoiler:
Character Name: Jarl Hodlin
Race: Nord
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Description: Hodlin is a kind, but tough jarl. He loves the area around Falkreath. He is a tall, muscular Nord with brown hair, that isn't too long, but not too short. He mainly leaves it a little unkept. He values life, and will not burn a city to the ground, but merely occupy it. He has decent knowledge on warfare.
Background: Hodlin was born in Whiterun, growing up in the surrounding area. When he grew older, he decided to explore Skyrim, and fell in love with The Falkreath. He lived in Falkreath for a while, the people looking up to him for his bravery and courage. He was soon made the new jarl after doing tasks for the people. He is respected, but is not questioned.
Other Information: He prefers a silver sword and bow and arrow, and a full set of glass armor, without the helmet. Sometimes when on the move he wears a brown tunic and hood.
Colour: (for the purposes of the map) Green, Falkreath
Username: King Acunaski!
Spoiler:
Character Name: Jarl Rosteir (also known as Rosteir the Pure, Rosteir the Stern, or Rosteir the Charger)
Race: Nord-Redguard
Gender: Female
Age: 34
Description: Jarl Rosteir is your classical Nordic beauty. Her long, thick, beautiful blonde hair flows through the winds of Skyrim with such elegance that most men would faint at the sight of her. She has a defined facial structure and large, deep amber eyes. Her body is lean and curvy - every man’s dream. Her skin is not as fair as the common Nord's, though. It is a bit more dark in color due to her Redguard blood.
But Rosteir’s attitude strongly contradicts her appearance. At age 34, she remains a virgin, thus her title “Rosteir the Pure”. She strongly disagrees with any form of intoxication (legal or illegal), reasonless celebration, and “unholy sexual acts”, thus her second title “Rosteir the Stern”. Her third title, Rosteir the Charger, is gained from her internationally known reputation for her powerful, ruthless cavalry charges during battle. She valiantly leads her vast, well-armed cavalry units into the combat fields during almost every battle, fearlessly risking her own life for the sake of her kingdom’s victory. It has gained her much respect (and terror) from both her soldiers and her enemies.
Rosteir enforces strict political discipline and runs a ruthless court. She strongly supports the “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” ideal. This seems to be working, as crime rates within her borders have never been lower. She is extremely loyal to her allies, and very intelligent and well-educated. Rosteir can be described as very powerful, determined, and strong willed. She disagrees with the traditional, male-dominated society that has existed in Tamriel since the dawn of time.
Background: Jarl Rosteir is one of the most controversial rulers in Skyrim, mostly due to her racial background, virginity, and brutal tactics on the battlefield. Her mother, a renowned Nordic noblewoman, was viciously raped by the Redguard leader of a local criminal organization. Rosteir was the result. She was neglected and hated as a child. The only being on the planet that seemed to care for her was her mother. Her older brother of full Nordic blood was favored by all. He was to be the future Jarl of Northshore. However, he mysteriously “disappeared” on the night before his coronation. This drew extreme amounts of suspicion and controversy. Yet Rosteir was still crowned Jarl of Northshore the next month. She was 23 at the time. It enraged the populace that a half-Nord had gained the title of Jarl. The people were angered by her Reguard blood, but Rosteir was able to quell every form of opposition that presented itself. Since then, she has faced criticism for her refusal to bear a child, as well has her lack of mercy in the court. Yet, she is honored by the majority of her people for her bravery, strength, intelligence, and respect.
Other Information: Rosteir harbors a secret far greater than anyone else could imagine. Nobody knows of this secret but her closest staff members. It has been stated that this secret affects her maintenance of her virginity, as well as her ability to remain Jarl. Her houscarl is a massive, 55 year old Nordic battlemage called Fanar. His vast array of abilities and loyalty to the Jarl of Northshore is well-known.
Jarl Rosteir is also criticized for her "Imperialistic" ruling methods. She put an extremely heavy emphasis on her military, training them to be the best of the best - quality over quanity.
Colour: Dark Blue (Northshore)

Spoiler:
Character Name: Belvyn Rethan (Other titles: Belvyn the Kind, Belvyn the Fair)
Race: Dunmer
Gender: Male
Age: 51 (considering he's a Dunmer that takes him for about 35-ish in Human years i'm reckoning)
Description: A Dunmer, obviously, he has rather dark grey skin, more darker so than other Dunmer. His eyes are a deep red, his face is also rather young looking, with a few wrinkles on his forehead and around his cheeks. His black hair is combed back over his head and very rarely moves from this position. He is lean in stature given to his athletic nature, due to this, Belvyn is a fast moving opponent when engaged in combat. He is fair minded and loved by his people for this, he is calm when under pressure and eager when given the chance. Although he does seem to be under the King's boot, he only ever does what is best for his people and will openly cry out when his Hold is directly affected in a negative way by the meetings of the Jarls. For this, he is highly respected in other Holds, for his stalwart behavior and 'almost Nord-like' demeanor.

Background: Born to a Hlaalu councilor and a Tribunal priestess, Belvyn led a solemn life of political studying and backstabbing in Narsis for the first 20 years of his life. One day his mother and father were killed in an Argonian ambush near in the Argon jungle on their way to Port Tear. Left to himself, Belvyn brought his younger brother Dramas (13 years of age) to their uncle's house in Balmora in Vvardenfell. After 8 years of living and studying the different cultures of Tamriel, he decided he would take leave to Skyrim to study how the Nord, Falmer and Dwemer cultures mixed and the history of their encounters. Only his brother tried to stop him from going, but that was only because he wanted Belvyn to pursue the House Hlaalu and become a councilor (a role his brother would eventually pertain).

When he was in Skyrim he purchased a cheap apartment in Winterhold, knowing that the College of Winterhold was there (it being the Imperial capital of Skyrim it was rather cosmopolitan as well, he was sure he would fit in with the Dunmer community there), he would obtain valuable knowledge from the archives in the college. When he reached the age of 30, he celebrated by joining an excavation team adventuring into a newly discovered Dwemer ruin in the mountains south of Winterhold. On the excavation were several guards, an Imperial captain that went by the name of Valerius Distinitus, the current Jarl of the Pale (his reason for coming was that he wanted to learn more about the wonders of Dwarven engineering), and the excavation leader, a Redguard called Azzan Christophe. He quickly made fast friends with the Jarl of the Pale, and during the excavation Belvyn and the Jarl found several important discoveries about the workings of the centurions and how they managed to work outside Morrowind. Azzan wanted these discoveries for himself, so Azzan trapped the Jarl, Belvyn and the Captain (Azzan was certain the Captain would tell law enforcement about his treachery) in the Dwemer tunnels. Eventually Belvyn met Azzan, and Azzan explained to Belvyn how he was going to kill him and steal his discoveries, Azzan then assaulted Belvyn, needless to say Belvyn's sword play came into hand and Belvyn eventually defeated Azzan and his guards with the help of the Captain and the Jarl.

After the excavations event, the Jarl invited Belvyn to continue his studies in the Jarl's longhouse in Nimalten. After 9 years of living in Nimalten he met a Nord woman named, Aeta White-Mane, he admired her strong will and her eagerness to help the lower classes even though she was part of one of the most influential families in Nimalten. Six years later (Belvyn is now 45), the Jarl died in a skirmish with Nede supramascists in the woods south of Nimalten, without an heir, the Jarl left the Hold to his best friend Belvyn, although this angered Belvyn greatly, one week later his wife gave birth to a child, a boy, he named Llaalan. Ever since Belvyn took the throne, he has battle against Nede supremascists and fought hard for equal rights for all races in not only the Pale, but the whole of Skyrim, gaining him great respect amongst the many races of Skyrim as well as some of the other Jarls.

Other Information: Has friends in high places, the Imperial Captain who accompanied him on the excavation is now a Legate in the Imperial garrison in Skyrim (although I don't think this should affect the RP), the Legate still keeps in contact with the Jarl and this has raised many eyebrows in other Holds, but Belvyn insists that he would never abuse his friendship with the Legate.

Other Information: He is distrustful towards Elves but he likes beastfolk.

He was appointed Thane after saving the Jarl from a bear attack. At 25, the Jarl was assassinated by a group of rebels, and Arelan rose to the throne, as the previous Jarl had not married yet. I'll take Dawnstar (Northshore). Lemme make a character sheet.

Re: Skyrim at War

Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:54 pm

I'd join this. In fact, I'd make a character. Now! Wait while I make a character sheet. I'll take Whiterun.

Here is another freakishly overdeveloped character from me.

Spoiler:
Username: AMM
Character Name: Jarl Bethany the Younger
Race: Nord
Gender: Female
Age: 30

Description: Jarl Bethany the Younger is widely hailed as one of the smartest people in Tamriel. She is analytical and calculating, as well as a trade mogul. She is small for a Nord, having never experienced an actual battle in her life. She has long, copper colored hair tied back in a ponytail. She wears robes (Similar to Jarl Laila’s) and has deep brown eyes.

Background: Jarl Bethany’s family has been sitting on Whiterun’s throne for centuries. Her mother, Jarl Bethany the Elder, had ruled for well over sixty years before succumbing to old age.

Jarl Bethany the Elder had three children, two girls and one young boy. The one in line for the next Jarl was to be the eldest, Arnora the Sword-Maiden, was serving in the Imperial Legion and unavailable to take the throne. Her middle-child Bethany the Younger then was promoted to Jarl.

Before becoming Jarl two years ago, Bethany the Younger owned several dozen farms in the Whiterun hold. She communicated with Nobles and began her own shipping business - Bethany was basically the overseer of all trade in the hold, and since Whiterun was the trade capital in Skyrim, she was basically the most important figure for trading in all of Skyrim. If you were in Solitude and wanted to trade with someone in Riften, you had to do business with Bethany. Becoming the Jarl did not change her stance in Skyrim, but made even more people recognize the fact that Whiterun dominated all trading done in the country.

Other Information: Her houscarl is her sister, Arnora the Sword-Maiden. Arnora offers insight in battle scenarios since Bethany has never been in one. Her steward is her brother Aerin. Bethany takes full advantage of potential allies and has Thanes, Handmaidens, servants, and advisors ready to serve her (Although she rarely needs them – she is a genius, after all. She mostly uses them as diplomats.)

Colour: (for the purposes of the map) Purple (Whiterun)

I hope this will allow diplomatic relations and alliances, especially because I set my character up to make trade alliances with many of the holds.

I must agree with you that would be fun and add another element to strategy

Username: Savilius

Woot! Forsworn, assemble! Fear me, barbaric Nords!

Or call hypocrisy. Your choice, really.

I'm making a female ruler as well. It's been a while since I played a chick.

Umm... so he was born in Whiterun, he loves Riverwood.... And he's Jarl of Falkreath? Odd.

I can't guarantee you'll get the Hold you want, but I'll take your preferences into account (depends on number of players and the implications on the map). So far we have 7 players, so if we get maybe two more we'll begin.

It's set in the 3rd Era, during the Septim Empire's rule of Skyrim. Winter Hold is the Capital, there is also a Legion stationed in Windhelm. Both receive a military bonus as compensation for fewer starting settlements, and because it makes sense with the existing Lore.

Also, for the purposes of the game, Nimalten City is the capital of The Pale, Whiterun is the capital of Whiterun Hold and Karthwasten is the Capital of the Reach. All other Hold capitals are in blue.

Isn't the Pale to the north?

In Modren Skyrim, but Bethesda hasn;'t been entirley faithful to previous Skyrim Lore, per se. They moved Markath quite a bit in comparison to previous maps. This one works slightly better than the 4th Era map which the game uses, in terms of settlements and what not.

Know what? I'm slowly realizing how immensely stupid it is to have taken Whiterun. I shall take Eastmarch shortly. Same character, different backstory.

Re: Skyrim at War

Mh. It seems like a terrible strategic warfare map. Dragon's Bridge is leagues from the Karth, and the Karth runs through neither Karthwasten nor Markarth. Which is kinda wonky. So... Perhaps, we can use another Skyrim map and map out some of the older settlements, maybe using the program Matt used for Faldor? I can scarcely see playing an RP with rivers and crossroads illogically placed, and a total lack of any mountain ranges...
But there's my five cents worth. It's certainly playable, but... Yeah, griping done.

I'm actually taking Winterhold. Just... lettin' ya know. Since there is a war I don't think there is a King so I won't make one.

Username: King Acunaski!
